KiRKnews has undergone some changes in appearance over the years and now, as well as the printed version, KiRKnews is now "online" and serves as the church website. The first 29 issues of KiRKnews were typed, stencilled and duplicated. Issue No. 1 is dated September 1980, the first to be published after the Union of Galston Old and Galston New in August of that year. Previously, Galston Old had published "Church News", also called "Old Parish Journal" since March 1957. The name "Kirk News" was established in January 1973 and continued after the Union.
Different ways of production were examined and Issue No. 30 included two pages professionally typeset and photo-copied. Issue Nos. 312-38 consisted of four A3 sheets folded to make eight pages. This new method of production made it possible to produce photographs and illustrations. Printers were changed for Issue No. 39 in 1987 and we reverted back to single A4 sheets from then until the last issue of last century.
There have been layout, typeface and masthead changes over the years and we deserted our professional printer for a short time to use the Church office equipment, but this had its limitations and we reverted back to a professional printer.
A special 64-page A5 edition was printed for the Millennium in January 2000. It was a double celebration because it was also the 100th Issue and for the first time there were pages of full colour. Issues 76 and 77 did contain red but this was the first time full colour was used. There was full colour again in Issues 105, 111 and 114, No. 111 being 16 A4 pages with four of them in full colour produced specially for Christmas 2001.
The Editor until then had been Robert Murray who briefly abandoned KiRKnews and Issues 115-123 were produced by other members of the congregation but typeset and printed professionally. Robert returned for Issue No. 124 after Rev. Loudon Blair retired as Minister and from then until now KiRKnews has been printed professionally, usually eight pages, sometimes 12, and occasionally 16, four or eight of them in full colour. The most recent Masthead change was for Issue No. 130 in October 2007 but the first and only paid advertisement - for GOCRUISE - didn't appear until January 2011. A new style including masthead was launched in January 2016 with a full page photograph on page one and new fonts used for the masthead.
28 back issues - from Issue No. 131 to present - are available in the Pastnews page and there are hard copies of all copies of Church News and Kirk News kept on file - a fine record of Parish Church life from 1957 until the present day.
There are currently three issues a year, published to coincide with Communion in February, June and October. The next Issue of KiRKnews will be No. 160 (September 2017).
